Dr Jack Demaine

We are sad to announce the passing of Dr Jack Demaine, a highly valued colleague and friend to many at the University.

It is with regret that we announce the passing of Dr Jack Demaine. Jack enthusiastically supported fellow members of staff as well as the successive generations of students he taught during his time at 桃色视频. Many of those he inspired have themselves gone on to become the kinds of teachers who make a difference to those in their care.

Jack’s academic career began at the University of Liverpool where he studied for his undergraduate degree in Sociology before going on to complete his PhD there. He specialised in education and made several important contributions to debates over policies and developments in a growing field of research. Jack was ahead of the curve in his writings, notably in his 1981 book Contemporary Theories in the Sociology of Education in which he critically engaged with the increasingly influential ideas of Paolo Freire among other thinkers in their field.

Jack was originally a leading member of the University’s Department of Education before moving to the Department of Social Sciences where he continued his research on aspects of teaching, schooling and citizenship education. He played a major organisational role as Programme Director for Social Policy and always worked hard to help numerous undergraduates to progress whatever challenges they faced.

Jack Demaine had an infectious sense of humour and was an incredibly warm and approachable person who always gave his time and considered guidance to those who sought his help.  Our thoughts are with his wife Lorraine, sons Tom and Will and their family at this sad time.
